Ruthie May Therrien, “May May,” or “Ms. May,” as she was known to friends and family, passed away December 28, 2018, at the age of 38.

Ruthie May, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, will be forever remembered by her precious children, Dhimani Rivera-Therrien, J’nyalise Hernandez-Therrien, and Rhia Wilson-Therrien, by her parents Robin Therrien and Lawrence Jackson, by her siblings, April Therrien, Andrew Therrien, Haily Matos-Rivera, Kayelana Matos-Rivera, Sarah Groom, Melissa Plumadore and Heather Clooney. She will be remembered by siblings on her paternal side and cousins whom she recognized as sisters, Camille and Nadene Westbrook, Diana and Luz Estrada.

She worked as a Corrections Officer for the state of Connecticut after graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice. While residing in Chicopee she mentored youth, some of whom were troubled. She inspired every one around her to reach for the stars even if we could only touch the cloud - inspired us to live life, to risk it all, accept challenges and triumph into victories.

Ruthie May was a fine writer and teacher, leading youth workshops with Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) when she herself was a teenager. She worked with young people in settings ranging from homeless shelters to college campuses. In her 2003 interview for the Florentine Films DVD Writing Alone and With Others, on the healing power of writing, she shared both her love of language and her firm belief in the empowerment possibility of sharing stories. “In the workshops we all learned from each other,” she said. "We learned how to hold ourselves up and say ‘this is me, and I’m proud to be me.’”

Those of us who knew and loved her as colleagues in the work of using writing as a healing and empowerment methodology will hold her in our continued work as teacher, "learning from each other;" our co-leader and beloved friend. Although her physical body is not here, she is in the hearts and spirits of all whom she has touched.

Ruthy,
Your spirit was so beautiful, every time we bumped into each other you made a point to show me love with compliments and encouragement. I was so happy seeing you visiting RWC my home church with your family. I know God has you in his hands. I send my prayers and condolences to your children and your family. I ask God to send an Angel to each of them to comfort them throughout their life. I will miss you my beautiful, outgoing, passionate friend. Save me a seat at the table. Love Victoria

Dhimani-
So sorry to learn about the passing of your mother, your champion, your nurturer, and your biggest supporter. I can’t imagine what that loss feels like for you, but I pray that as a living representative of her love, you will continue to make her proud. God Bless You.
