VICENTE NIEVES Obituary

In Loving Memory Of

VICENTE NIEVES

     "NEGRO"

  1943 - 2022

Vicente “Negro” Nieves, 78, of Holyoke, MA passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at Baystate Medical Center.

Vicente or “Negro” as family and friends called him, was born September 6, 1943, a son of the late Thomas Nieves & Luz Maria (Rivera) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  He was brought to Hartford, Ct at an early age and lived there for many years. In the 1970s he moved to Holyoke and found his first love Dee Dee Estrada. After Dee Dee’s passing, he later married Carmen Nieves. Carmen and Vincente divorced, and he met Arroya Seimide whom he shared many years with. For years, Vicente worked hard to care for his family. He was a longtime employee of the historic Mountain Park and C & S Wholesale Grocers.

Negro was an active, crafty person who enjoyed keeping busy.  He had many hobbies such as building model cars, puzzles, creating things out of wood and cooking.  Vicente also enjoyed listening to music, particularly songs by “James Brown” and “Freddy Fender”.

During retirement he moved to Prosper of Monastery Heights Assisted Living, where he met Beatrice his last companion. Negro was also nicknamed “Vinnie” by the staff and residents at the retirement home. Vinnie enjoyed playing bingo with his friends in the retirement home and was given the title of “President of the Residents” since he often advocated for the rights of the residents. He seemed to enjoy being there and they loved him.

Besides his parents, Vicente was predeceased by his by first wife Dee Dee Estrada, his daughter Carmen Rosario, his brother Thomas Nieves and sister Carmen Luz Nieves.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving companion Beatrice, who adored him, two daughters, Luz Maria Estrada and Jessica Colon, a son, Victor Nieves, two sisters, Gloria Lopez and Finin Nieves, two brothers, Luis Manuel Lopez and Gilberto Nieves, two daughters in laws, Melissa E. Faulha and Maria Colon, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
